Inserting a Diode or FET splitter will however prevent any return voltage/current from the batteries to the B+, and the alternator will not start. The new ‘AC’ diode isolators feature a special current limited energize input that will power the B+ when the engine run/stop switch is closed.
Although, the battery voltages finally are not converged to the same value, the experiments show that the equaliser is able to increase usable time for the battery string. The experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility and performance of the proposed charge equaliser.
Notice, the SiC diode has a lot of vias underneath as can be seen in the layout. This is done in order to reduce the thermal resistance of the PCB by improving heat dissipation. Both the boost stages are designed to be symmetrical and the schematic and layout are kept as identical as possible.

Simply inserting the isolator in the cabling between the alternator and the batteries will slightly reduce charge voltage. The result can be that batteries are not charged to the full 100% and age prematurely.
