When the sun is rising, the photovoltaic (PV) cells begin generating an electrical current. This initiates a signal to the overall power system that electricity from the panels is available. Electricity produced by the solar panels will almost always take priority over grid-sourced electricity.
Sunlight strikes the solar cells of the solar panel. Some of the rays of light or photons pass through the outer layers of the cell and into the silicon core. When the photons enter the core, they excite and free the electrons.
The more sunlight the solar panels receive, the more electricity they can generate. At nighttime, solar panels certainly do not produce electricity since there is no sunlight to initiate the photovoltaic effect.
Confusion over the impact of heat and light in solar power starts with the fact that there are different types of solar power. One type of power, called solar thermal, does use the sun’s light to generate heat which can be used for things such as household hot water or to generate steam to drive turbines and generate electricity.
But, that doesn’t mean that the solar-generated power stored throughout the day simply disappears. If there is electricity stored in the capacitors mentioned above, that electricity can be used during the evening and nighttime hours, saving the system owner extra money, as evenings tend to be ‘primetime’ energy usage windows.
A solar electric system is typically made up of: Solar PV systems generate electricity during daylight hours only, predominately around the middle of the day. In Ireland, around 75% is produced from May to September. If this electricity is not used in the home it is exported to the grid.
