The decline in costs for solar power and storage systems offers opportunity for solar-plus-storage systems to serve as a cost-competitive source for the future energy system in China. The transportation, building, and industry sectors account, respectively, for 15.3, 18.3, and 66.3% of final energy consumption in China (5).
In China, generation-side and grid-side energy storage dominate, making up 97% of newly deployed energy storage capacity in 2023. 2023 was a breakthrough year for industrial and commercial energy storage in China. Projections show significant growth for the future.
The large-scale development of energy storage technologies will address China’s flexibility challenge in the power grid, enabling the high penetration of renewable sources. This article intends to fill the existing research gap in energy storage technologies through the lens of policy and finance.
