Beginning with the discovery of the photovoltaic effect by Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel in 1839, the narrative progresses through significant breakthroughs, such as the invention of the first solar cell by Charles Fritts in 1883 and the development of silicon solar cells in the 1950s.
Herein, the current state of the technology of third-generation cells and the study of building integration have been reviewed. Important issues on the integration of solar cells with buildings are considered under three categories of transparency, colour and energy-saving. The main conclusions of the present study can be listed as follows:
As for the design strategy, increasing the efficiency of the existing building systems is the first step, followed by detecting renewable and passive design potentials. In such a procedure, the solar building passive design aspects are thoroughly discussed and elaborated in the next part of the chapter.
The construction of a solar cell is very simple. A thin p-type semiconductor layer is deposited on top of a thick n-type layer. Electrodes from both the layers are developed for making contacts. A thin electrode on the top of the p-type semiconductor layer is formed. This electrode does not obstruct light to reach the thin p-type layer.
An overview of the key milestones in the history of solar cells is as follows: Discovery of the photovoltaic effect (1839): French physicist Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel first observed the photovoltaic effect, the principle behind solar cells, in 1839. He discovered that certain materials produced small electric currents when exposed to light .
These solar cells have attained the maximum efficiency of 31%. They can revolutionize the solar energy technology. Currently, these solar cells are confined to the labs due to their low stability. The fourth-generation or 4G solar cell technology is the future of solar energy harvesting.

Photovoltaic Effect: An Introduction to Solar Cells
The solar cell is the basic building block of solar photovoltaics. When charged by the sun, this basic unit generates a dc photovoltage of 0.5 to 1.0V and, in short circuit, a photocurrent of some tens of mA/cm2. Since the voltage is too small for most applications, to produce a useful voltage, the cells are connected in series into
