This presents a significant challenge for the construction and planning of peaking power solutions in China. Pumped storage plants provide a means of reducing the peak-to-valley difference and increasing the deployment of wind power, solar photovoltaic energy and other clean energy generation into the grid.
China's reforms and opening to foreign countries have promoted economic development that has required expansion of the power grid. Due to the limited distribution of hydropower resources, hydropower is rarely utilised in coal-based power areas, such as Guangdong, Northern China and Eastern China.
This situation dictates that the future of China's electric power development must adhere to the “A Special and Four Big” development strategy: accelerating the development of a strong grid based on the high-voltage grid and promoting base constructions of large-scale hydropower, coal power, nuclear power and renewable energy.
Ensuring the security and stability of China's power system presents a significant challenge. Grid-connected wind turbines have been limited to in the regions of Western Inner Mongolia, Eastern Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Jilin, which restricts the sustainable development of clean energy in China.
