Ethylene vinyl acetate EVA, a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate is the predominating material of choice for manufacturing the encapsulate film since the early eighties, and nearly 80% of PV modules are encapsulated with EVA film [4, 13, 29].
Initially, at around 100 °C temperature, encapsulate film melts and acts as an adhesive after cooling, and provides adhesion between the PV cells, the front cover and the back sheet, and all the regions in-between the front cover and back sheet.
Solar cell encapsulation literature is reviewed broadly in this paper. Commercial solar cells, such as silicon and thin film solar cells, are typically encapsulated with ethylene vinyl acetate polymer (EVA) layer and rigid layers (usually glass) and edge sealants.
There are opportunities for improvement in the encapsulation process of thin film modules by performing a broad based materials selection study to investigate suitable materials and processes to reduce the cost and improve the reliability of the modules ( Barth et al., 2018 ).
