Thanks to our partnership, ON Power is helping develop public charging infrastructure in Iceland. ON Power is the largest clean energy provider in Iceland. Founded in 2014, it produces and sells electricity by harnessing renewable resources in a responsible and environmentally friendly way.
The site at a hotel near Keflavík Airport will boast 20 chargers, making it the largest rapid charging hub in Iceland. InstaVolt, a British company now owned by EQT Infrastructures, launched in Iceland only earlier this year. InstaVolt Iceland aims to install over 200 chargers across the country.
EV charging provider InstaVolt started working on its first public charging hub in Iceland. The site at a hotel near Keflavík Airport will boast 20 chargers, making it the largest rapid charging hub in Iceland. InstaVolt, a British company now owned by EQT Infrastructures, launched in Iceland only earlier this year.
However, while the number of chargeable vehicles reached nearly 17,000 in 2020, there were only 386 public charging points. These statistics, paired with the ambitious goals set by Iceland's government, such as Iceland’s aspiration to be carbon-neutral before 2040, made it clear to ON Power that charging infrastructure is a valuable investment.
InstaVolt Iceland aims to install over 200 chargers across the country. Their first installation is under construction at the Aðaltorg Courtyard Marriott hotel at Keflavík Airport. There is no information on the type of chargers, but InstaVolt works with companies such as Tritium on DC charging elsewhere.
Approximately 85% of the total energy production in Iceland comes from renewable sources: mostly from geothermal energy and hydropower. To also decrease emissions from the transportation sector, the Icelandic government has recently made the decision to start banning the registration of all new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 onwards.
