The merits and demerits of energy storage capacitors are compared with the other energy storage units. The basic need of an energy storage system is to charge as quickly as possible, store maximum energy, and discharge as per the load demand.
Capacitors exhibit exceptional power density, a vast operational temperature range, remarkable reliability, lightweight construction, and high efficiency, making them extensively utilized in the realm of energy storage. There exist two primary categories of energy storage capacitors: dielectric capacitors and supercapacitors.
Ragone plot for significant energy storage and conversion devices. From the plot in Figure 1, it can be seen that supercapacitor technology can evidently bridge the gap between batteries and capacitors in terms of both power and energy densities.
Providing reliability in both generations and supplying energy storage devices plays a very important role. Among all energy storage devices, the capacitor banks are the most common devices used for energy storage. The advantage of capacitor banks is, that they can provide very high current for short period.
The capacitor life can be extended by minimizing the degree of voltage reversal in the normal mode of operation. The reversal of the voltage creates stress on the capacitor which also comprises enhancement of the electric field in the dielectric medium, more power losses, and more heating on the conductor.
These problems mainly arise on the distribution side due to the presence of nonlinear loads, unbalanced loads, and power electronics converters. The capacitor can act as an energy storage device for the system to improve power quality and reliability ( Fig. 4.19) .

In contrast with traditional capacitors, the area between the electrode and dielectric of the supercapacitors is very large, and the thickness of the dielectric is nanometer, so the capacitance of the supercapacitors is the order of farad (F), higher than the electrolytic capacitors (mF) and dielectric capacitors (μF), which is the reason why it is called "super."
