The direct electrolysis of the spent lead paste is performed in (NH 4) 2 SO 4 system, and the Pourbaix E-pH diagram in Pb-S-H 2 O system could outline the thermodynamics of the direct electrolysis process, where the concentration of Pb and S substance is 1.0 mol L −1.
As observed in Fig. 13 a, the lowest lead recovery ratio (93.8%) in the electrolytic product is obtained in strong acid solution A compared with original solution C. Firstly, due to the high acidity (pH < 1.0) of the solution A, few spent lead paste will react with the electrolyte and fall off from the cathode palate during the cathodic reduction.
The current efficiency is as high as 99.9% and the electrolytic lead recovery rate reaches up to 99.8%. In addition, the new recovery process avoids the emission of lead effluent by means of the recycling of the waste electrolyte. Therefore, it is a lead recovery process of low energy consumption and environmental friendliness.
Nevertheless, owing to the high toxicity of HBF 4 or H 2 SiF 6 and corrosion of experimental equipment, direct electrochemical solid-phase electrolysis of spent lead paste to recover metal lead has been developed to offer a short process, cleanliness and high-efficiency recycling solution [18, 19, 20].
The influence of electrolyte concentration on the direct electrolysis of desulfurized lead paste was carried out in the range between 150 and 350 g/L with the current density of 200 Am −2, and other parameters the same as “ The Effect of Current Density ” section, as shown in Fig. 7.
A green, efficient, and short route for recovering metal lead from spent lead-acid batteries has a great advantage in both environmental protection and sustainable development of lead industry. This paper developed a new scheme to recover metal lead by direct electrolysis in (NH 4) 2 SO 4 solution with desulfurized lead paste.
