Performance diverges for different cell types. The variation for silicon cells is equivalent to ~20 °C of temperature variation. A limitation in the performance rating of solar cells and modules is that they are evaluated using a single value for the solar spectrum: AM1.5.
The determination of the current–voltage characteristics of a solar cell under illumination requires measuring current–voltage pairs that match, which means that current and voltage values must correspond to the same state of operation of the solar cell.
In order to address these challenges, we constructed two new evaluation methods to determinate the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of PSCs. The first setup is a solar simulator based on light emitting diodes (LEDs) allowing evaluation of the solar cells at wider range of light intensities, ranging from 102 to 10−3 mW·cm−2.
Analysis The influence of spectral variation on nine solar cell types is evaluated using their current-best characteristics (Appendix E), as given in the Solar Cell Efficiency Tables and NREL's Best Research-Cell Efficiency Chart .
Nine solar cell types (single-junction and multijunction) are evaluated using spectra at more than forty locations, spanning 76° of latitude and 150° of longitude, at hourly intervals over a year.
To obtain repeatable measurements, solar cells and modules are tested under indoor solar simulators that are calibrated to deliver a given irradiance and spectrum (Fraunhofer, 2020, IEC 60904-9, 2006). Use of a single, fixed standard spectrum value has delivered valuable continuity over the years and consistency across academia and industry.

Effect of Light Intensity
Solar cells experience daily variations in light intensity, with the incident power from the sun varying between 0 and 1 kW/m 2. At low light levels, the effect of the shunt resistance becomes increasingly important. As the light intensity decreases, the bias point and current through the solar cell also decreases, and the equivalent resistance of the solar cell may begin to …
