Battery storage projects from Hynfra Energy Storage and OX2 totalling 130MWh have won contracts in energy auctions in Poland this week. A capacity market auction for 2027 from transmission system operator Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) closed at PLN 406.35/kW/year (US$93) and handed out long-term contracts to energy resources.
“In the Polish market, units are expected to produce their contracted capacity for four hours, leaving investors to adapt their strategy based on their storage duration and repowering plans. This is generally positive as it allows the market to determine the most effective approach.”
The auction which took place last month (December 2023) cleared at a fixed, consumer price-indexed (CPI) price of PLN 244.90/kW (US$61.73) per year for the contracts which start in 2028, the Polish state bulletin revealed yesterday (9 January). The contract lengths range from 1 to 17-years.
Image: Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne / WikiCommons. The results of Poland’s recent capacity market auction have been revealed, with a clearing price significantly lower than the previous years and IPP Greenvolt saying it won the lion’s share of around 1.7GW of BESS awarded contracts.
The capacity market is set to kickstart the large-scale BESS market in Poland by providing the basic building blocks of the business case, according to numerous delegates interviewed by Energy-Storage.news at Energy Storage Summit Central Eastern Europe (CEE) 2023 in Warsaw in September.
The energy storage pipeline figures for Poland should perhaps be taken with a note of caution: Umeda claimed some developers submit projects as battery storage in order to get a connection quicker, when in reality they intend to develop renewables.
