A lead acid battery consists of a negative electrode made of spongy or porous lead. The lead is porous to facilitate the formation and dissolution of lead. The positive electrode consists of lead oxide. Both electrodes are immersed in a electrolytic solution of sulfuric acid and water.
A lead-acid battery is a rechargeable battery that uses lead and sulphuric acid to function. The lead is submerged into the sulphuric acid to allow a controlled chemical reaction. This chemical reaction is what causes the battery to produce electricity. Then, this reaction is reversed to recharge the battery.
The battery should not, therefore, be discharged below this voltage. In between the fully discharged and charged states, a lead acid battery will experience a gradual reduction in the voltage. Voltage level is commonly used to indicate a battery's state of charge.
The electrolyte solution in a lead-acid battery consists of approximately 35% sulfuric acid and 65% water. The acid concentration is usually between 4.2-5 mol/L, and the solution has a density of 1.25-1.28 kg/L. The electrolyte solution plays a vital role in the battery’s operation.
A 12V Lead Acid battery has many uses, both in small and large applications. With this type of battery, it is critical to understand its capacity – which is measured in Amp-hours (Ah) or Milliamp-hours (mAh). This is the amount of energy output from the battery before requiring a recharge.
Gassing introduces several problems into a lead acid battery. Not only does the gassing of the battery raise safety concerns, due to the explosive nature of the hydrogen produced, but gassing also reduces the water in the battery, which must be manually replaced, introducing a maintenance component into the system.
