Image: DEWA The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made significant progress toward increasing its dependence on renewable energy in recent years, with the goal of increasing the share of clean energy in its total power mix to 50% by 2050.
With the implementation of programs like the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to provide 75% of Dubai’s total power capacity from clean energy sources, and the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030, the nation has established lofty targets for the advancement of solar PV technology.
Total installed solar power capacity in the UAE was over 5 gigawatts (GW) after switching on the 2 gigawatt (GW) Al Dhafra solar project in November of 2023, up from 133 MW in 2014. Solar energy provided 4.5% of national electricity generation in the UAE in 2022 and 8.3% in 2023, compared to 0.3% in 2014.
None of these is installed in the UAE. The largest capacity among the 36 installations which use PV only as an energy source is 53 m 3 /day, and the specific energy consumption is in the range 0.89–32.4 kWh/m 3, and the lowest water production cost was USD 3.25/m 3.
The growth of solar energy in the UAE is also hampered by a number of factors, including legal and legislative concerns, funding constraints, and grid integration limitations. One such challenge is the lack of regulation for the distributed generation (DG) market in the UAE outside the Dubal emirate.
It has a planned production capacity of 5,000 MW by 2030, with investments totalling AED 50 billion. When completed, it will save over 6.5 million tons of carbon emissions annually. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park contributed to DEWA winning the Best Sustainable Project of the Year in the UAE at the 2014 MEED Quality Awards.
