Once the European solar market passed the symbolic mark of 100 GW of installed capacity in the spring of 2016, solar become one of the lowest cost power generation technologies in Europe. In the German solar tender in February 2017, the lowest awarded bid was 6 euro cents (KW h) −1.
This essential resource is developed with contributions from SolarPower Europe’s members and various national solar associations. It aims to assist policymakers, industry stakeholders, and investors in understanding the critical trends and policy changes influencing the solar market.
Jonathan Touriño Jacobo explores how Eastern and Southern European countries have emerged in that race as key players for the European Union to reach 740GW of solar capacity installed by 2030. For a long time now the hottest markets to develop solar PV in Europe were Germany and Spain, followed by the Netherlands, France and Italy.
As a result, much of the next phase of growth in Europe's solar capacity is likely to take place across the southern parts of the continent, which are better suited than the north for large scale solar power generation thanks to far more year-round sunshine, and often more land that can be used for utility-scale solar plants.
Spain's PVOUT reading of 4.41 kWh/kWp is the highest in Europe, and compares to 2.96 for Germany, 2.86 for The Netherlands, and 2.84 for Denmark and Sweden, according to data published by the World Bank and SolarGIS. In 2022, Spain had 20.52 gigawatts (GW) of installed solar power, according to Ember.
PV is now a significant part of Europe's electricity mix, producing 2% of the demand in the EU and roughly 4% of peak demand. PV roof-top system in Berlin, Germany. In 2011 the EU's solar electricity production is evaluated as ca 44.8 TWh in 2011 with 51.4 GW installed capacity, up 98% on 2010. In 2011 in the EU new installations were 21.5 GW.
