Aluminium, lead, zinc, calcium, manganese, yttrium, indium, mercury, and tin are the commonly used alloying elements in magnesium batteries , .
Anode materials made of magnesium as well as magnesium alloys, air cathode design and composition, and promising electrolytes for magnesium–air batteries have all been examined. A brief note on the possible and proposed improvements in design and functionality is also incorporated.
The usage of Mg–Al–Zn alloys for lithium-ion battery shell is able to achieve further lightweight of electric vehicles, and their corrosion resistance would highly determine the service life.
Magnesium, the eighth most abundant element in the Earth's crust, is considered a nontoxic material, and it offers significant benefits for battery technology . It has a high volumetric capacity of 3833 mAh cm − ³ and low reduction potential of −2.4 V vs. SHE [9, 10].
The cathode reaction consumes oxygen, while the air cathode does not; therefore, the battery capacity of magnesium–air batteries is mainly determined by the capacity of the magnesium anode, while the cathode mainly determines the output power of the battery.
Three Mg–Sn alloys (with Sn contents of 1, 3, and 5 wt%) were investigated as anodes for magnesium-air batteries. The effect of Sn addition on the microstructure, electrochemical behaviour and battery discharge properties of Mg alloys was studied. Addition of Sn improves the operational voltage of Mg at low to high current densities.
