Abstract: High-voltage (HV) capacitor banks are constructed using combinations of series and parallel capacitor units to meet the required voltage and kilovar requirements. These capacitor banks utilize protective relays, which will trip the bank when problems are detected.
Bank stability for a fuseless capacitor bank is similar to that of an externally fused capacitor bank and defined by shorted series sections, internal to individual capacitors. The voltage on the remaining series sections in the string should not exceed 110% of its rated voltage.
2(i.e. U C1’ U C2’ U D/2), the manufacturers usually strictly recommend the application of balancing resistors R Bconnected in parallel to each capacitor [4, 5]. As will be discussed in Section 2 these resistors cause high dissipative losses, especially if they are dimensioned to cover full-range capacitor worst-case leakage.
6 Conclusion The active concept introduced in this paper is a very attractive method for the voltage balancing of series- connected electrolytic capacitors. The proposed circuit advantageously substitutes the commonly used passive balancing resistors of DC voltage link converters.
Also known by literature are systems where the capacitor balancing is based on a specific topology or arrangement of a switch-mode power supply (SMPS), for example, for providing the housekeeping power of the drive inverter. In [7–9], modified fly-back SPMS have been proposed which inherently balance their input voltage.
When designing a capacitor bank, many factors must be taken into consideration: rated voltage, kvar needs, system protection and communications, footprint and more. These factors govern the selection of the capacitor units to be used, along with proper grouping of these units.
Capacitor Bank Protection for Simple and Complex Configurations
This paper describes three significantly different types of banks and uses real-time simulation to evaluate protection effectiveness and stability for each application. The banks studied include both fuseless and internally fused designs. The same principles apply to an externally fused bank as to an internally fused bank.
