The battery storage facility in Moerdijk is the second battery storage facility to be built by RWE in the Netherlands: the company started construction of a battery storage facility in Eemshaven at the beginning of the year with an installed capacity of 35 MW and a storage capacity of 41 MWh.
Dispatch, a Dutch battery developer, is going to construct the Netherlands’ largest stand-alone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the port area of Dordrecht. The system will be used for grid stabilization by storing excess energy from renewable sources. The battery, consisting of 144 Fluence cubes will be located on a 6000m² site.
This is related to the Netherlands’ strong heritage as a hotspot for testing and validation of electric systems. The expertise and network accumulated at these centers are invaluable for boosting and scaling development of the next generations of batteries for a wide range of purposes.
Equans Netherlands will take charge of the engineering and construction of the battery storage system. Eneco will use the battery on a long-term basis to manage differences in supply and demand in energy markets.
The facilities at the new Battery Lab provide an opportunity to make and test battery cells. New materials can then be integrated and optimized into different cell designs. TNO has worked hard over the past three years, with financial support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Province of North Brabant, to realize the lab.
The domestic need for a robust and affordable, self-reliant net-zero energy system, combined with our capabilities, a large international market and momentum, has boosted battery ambitions in the Netherlands. It led to the establishment of the Battery Competence Cluster NL in 2019.
