Touch the red probe to the battery’s positive terminal and the black probe to its negative terminal. You should have a working battery if the multimeter reading is close to the voltage written on the battery. However, if the reading is lower, it’s probably dead. For more tips, including how to test a 9-volt battery, read on!
A load test measures the battery's power when it's in use. Higher-end multimeters have 2 load settings, 1.5V and 9V. For a AA, AAA, C, or D battery, set the voltage dial to 1.5V. Set the voltage to 9V for a 9v battery. Hold the black probe to the negative end of the battery and the red probe to the positive end to test the battery's milliamps.
Compare the bounce to a battery you know is dead if you need help. Using a dead battery can give you a better frame of reference for the battery you're testing. Take a battery that doesn’t work when you place it in a device. Then drop the two batteries next to each other and compare their bounces.
However, it is often obvious that the battery is reaching the end of its useful life. In the case of a test result which does not definitely indicate “Battery OK”, other influencing factors must be taken into account for better interpretation of the result. E.g. Subjective impression by the driver – e.g. fewer Start-Stop moments than previously.
As you can see from the image above the voltage was in the range of the specified voltage. The battery we tested was a 1.5V battery. Anything less than 1V, in this case, would indicate a faulty battery. When testing for the level of current you should follow the same steps after moving the dial to the correct location.
During a battery check, one should visually inspect the battery for any signs of damage, such as leaks or corrosion. If any damage is detected, it may indicate that the battery needs to be replaced. In addition to visual inspection, a battery check should also include a test to measure the battery’s voltage.

How can I tell how much juice a LiPo battery still has in it?
The available energy left in a battery is loosely related to the terminal voltage but also depends on the battery temperature. This gives a better estimate of the charge state of the battery ...
