CFP China reached a milestone with advancing efforts to build a solar power station in space in 2028, aiming to convert sunlight in outer space into electrical supply to drive the satellites in orbits or transmit power back to Earth, according to China's spacecraft maker China Academy of Space Technology (CAST).
In 2015, Northrop Grumman Corporation in the U.S. sponsored a $17.5 million research over three years for the development of the Space Solar Power Initiative (SSPI). Duan proposed in late 2013 to kick off China's own initiative and then his team put forward China's tech approach of SSPS called OMEGA.
The hydroelectric station became fully operational in 2012 and can generate around 100 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. China is not the only country interested in building space-based solar power (SBSP) projects.
According to the product’s structural features, China’s deployable solar arrays are mainly divided into rigid, semi-rigid, and flexible solar arrays. China’s Dongfanghong (DFH)-4 platform is a typical rigid solar array—that is, it is a 1D secondary-deployment rigid solar array composed of a connecting frame, panels, and a set of mechanisms.
At present, relevant technical research is also being conducted in China. However, considering that the power demand is above the megawatts level, it is not reasonable to use a single solar array to realize this function.
