They offer high capacitance density by volume, have low ESR, excellent long term stability over its life, and superior frequency performance. They are much smaller than aluminium electrolytic capacitors, and have almost unlimited shelf life. Solid tantalum capacitors are replacing wet aluminium electrolytic capacitors.
Still, it is something to be aware of when using tantalum capacitors near their ratings. In comparison to ceramic capacitors, the equivalent series resistance of a tantalum capacitor is relatively high, typically orders of magnitude higher. This makes tantalum capacitors a poor choice for high-frequency applications.
For most electrical circuit applications, MnO2 tantalum capacitors are a good choice. They have been proven in use for several decades, so their characteristics and reliability are well understood. They have a high volumetric efficiency (CV) and very stable parameters.
These capacitors are ideal for consumer applications, along with some industrial applications. Due to their low ESR, polymer tantalums are useful for high current applications and those that require low ripple voltage. For example, 5G partial power supply, GPU, AI, GaN Fast Charger, and some LED lighting applications.
Tantalum capacitors (like aluminum electrolytic capacitors) thrive in the military temperature range of -55° C to 125° C. This opens commercial applications (0 to 70° C), industrial uses (-40° C to 85° C) and automotive products (-40° C to 105° C). Construction of a surface mount tantalum electrolytic capacitor. Tantalum capacitors are typically significantly higher priced than MLCCs, so the usage of tantalum caps has become increasingly rare for general applications. They do have some outstanding features which make them ideal for certain applications, despite their additional cost. Tantalum capacitors exhibit a linear capacitance change with temperature.
Should I Use a Tantalum or Class II MLC Capacitor in My Circuit?
More specifically, tantalum capacitors use a porous tantalum metal shaped in a pellet as the anode, an oxide layer as the dielectric, and a manganese oxide layer as the cathode (Figure 1). Tantalum capacitors can come in radial, axial, and surface-mount (SM) form factors. Figure 1. A diagram of the construction of a typical tantalum capacitor ...

Tantalum Capacitors: Advantages & Considerations
What makes tantalum capacitors unique is the usage of tantalum for the anode of the device. This anode is set up as one chunk of material inside of the case, which is very different from the layering style used in MLCC capacitors where the material is sandwiched on itself and then capped on the ends. Using tantalum results in a very thin dielectric layer, …
