This chapter and ASME Y14.100M establish requirements for application of markings on engineering drawings and associated lists. These markings are used in support of and in addition to graphics and text to convey information about the drawing, the list or items depicted thereon.
The preferred standard for Engineering Drawing Practices is ASME Y14.100M. The contractual application of MIL-STD-100 is permissible provided one or both of the following conditions exist: Standard practices for the preparation of engineering drawings, drawing format and media for delivery.
Deletion of microfilming requirements for drawing format. Flow chart for flight projects redefined. The GSFC Engineering Drawing Standards Manual is the official source for the requirements and interpretations to be used in the development and presentation of engineering drawings and related documentation for the GSFC.
Units of Measurement, Terminology The quantities shown on mechanical and electrical drawings and associated documents produced by J & E Hall International are expressed in SI units or SI derived units; refer to J & E Hall International Standard JEH-ES-02-001 Guide to the International System of Units (SI).
Complete drawings contain or make reference to all data necessary for fabricating and installing the part and, when applicable, the necessary test requirements, procurement requirements, and source. Third-angle orthographic projection shall be used for mechanical engineering drawings. (Certain diagrams, schematics, etc., are excepted.)
The Subcommittee was formed to prepare a standard that defined the accepted drawing types used to establish engineering requirements in the production and procurement of hardware. The basis for this Standard was Chapter 200 of the military standard MIL-STD-100, Engineering Drawing Practices.

Engineering Drawings
To understand how to "read" a drawing it is necessary to be familiar with the standard conventions, rules, and basic symbols used on the various types of drawings. But before learning how to read the actual "drawing," an understanding of the information contained in the various non-drawing areas of a print is also necessary.
