We find that battery energy storage can become one of the cornerstones of the energy storage portfolio in Ireland and also one of the few options which can enable the Irish electricity sector to access the required domestic flexibility resources.
The result of capacity auction shows that the not only the existing battery energy storage do not participate in the capacity auctions, the capacity market is not attractive for the new BSUs in comparison to the other technologies.
Therefore, the European legislations addressing the integration of renewable energy resources, gas emissions, and electric vehicles can affect the deployment of the battery energy storage in the member states. It was in 1997, that the first target was set for renewable energies to achieve a share of 12 % by 2010 at the European level .
