Screening tests for battery fire extinguishing agents were also performed. The effectiveness of an agent was evaluated through experiments on the cooling effect of fire extinguishing agents. Among the various agents, water and foam were found to be the most effective. 1. Introduction
This is due to the fact that extinguishing agents could disperse hot smoke and lower the temperature above the cell. For this reason, the damage of hot smoke to the components above the cell should be reduced, and the ignition of other materials in the battery module should be prevented as well.
The thermal runaway of a lithium-ion battery (LIB) often results in fires or even explosions. Thus, finding a proper, effective and clean extinguishing agent is imperative. In this paper, fire and extinguishing tests on commercially available large-scale LIBs with LiNi x Co y Mn z O 2 (NCM)/graphite electrodes are investigated.
Flashover and a jet fire are observed in the test without extinguishing agent. Water mist can effectively extinguish the battery fire, compared to CO 2 and HFC-227ea. Water mist reduces the max temperature of the cell by 133 °C. The thermal runaway of a lithium-ion battery (LIB) often results in fires or even explosions.
