The China-based PV manufacturing industry has been in a massive capacity expansion phase since 2019. This intensified in the first quarter of 2020, but had eased off throughout the year and cumulative figures are jaw dropping, leading to real fears of overcapacity in 2021.
“Considering the recent accelerated clearing of production capacity, we believe that the supply and demand situation of the photovoltaic industry could be corrected for the better in 2024,” said Wu Bohua and Cao Haihua, analysts at Changjiang Securities this month.
China’s solar photovoltaic (PV) industry’s protracted battle with overcapacity may be drawing to a close, after years of bruising price wars and rapid capacity build-up plunged half the sector into the red, forcing closures and disrupting expansion plans, analysts say.
The US added only 20GW of PV capacity last year, mainly due to the effects of tthe Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act and price fluctuations across the supply chain. But the market is set to improve this year and return to 30-40GW in 2023 driven by the Inflation Reduction Act.
The global solar PV market installed 250GW of new capacity in 2022, bringing the cumulative installed capacity to 1TW. Newly installed capacity will increase to 1TW in 2030, and the cumulative installed capacity will reach 6TW in the same year. China will continue to be the dominant player in the solar PV industry.
The world is increasing its installed solar PV capacity as 1TW will be added annually by 2030, while the annual polysilicon and wafer production capacity will continue to rise, according to the report Powering a Green Future: A Forecast to 2030 for Solar, Wind, and Energy Storage published by Taiwanese renewables research firm InfoLink Consulting.
