Various energy sources can be utilized for ammonia synthesis and hydrogen production processes. Solar energy as a renewable power source has been proposed for a solar power-based combined plant for power, hydrogen, methane, ammonia, and urea production .
In this study, an integrated solar-based ammonia synthesis and fuel cell system is developed and investigated thermodynamically. The system utilizes the excess energy of a solar PV power plant to synthesize ammonia, which is later used for energy production. The system performance is studied dynamically on the average day of each month.

The authors evaluated the feasibility of different configurations of electrolysis and ammonia synthesis processes, and analyzed the economic and environmental impacts of the proposed systems.
The commercial ammonia production plant employs natural gas reforming to produce hydrogen that causes harmful environmental emissions. This study presents a new configuration of the solar energy-based ammonia production system that employs solar energy to produce environmentally benign hydrogen.
It is essential to investigate the usage of ammonia for energy storage, especially for the applications of intermittent energy resources. Hence, in the present study, a new integrated solar-based ammonia synthesis and fuel cell system is presented. The excess power generated by a solar photovoltaic system is utilized to synthesize ammonia.
The team developed — and submitted a patent for — the Solar Thermal Ammonia Production, or STAP, process, which uses advanced solar thermochemical looping technology to purify nitrogen from the air and synthesize ammonia under relatively low pressures.

During the periods when the availability of energy from the solar PV power plant is low, some of the ammonia produced is used as fuel to produce useful power. By so doing, the integrated system allows the storage of excess energy coming from the solar PV power plant in the form of NH 3. At the maximum power output, the production rate of H 2 and NH 3 are 97.2 …
