It reduces the fossil fuel usage and emission of greenhouse gases and provides a sustainable solution of energy generation. Among the devices that uses solar energy, solar air collector is one of the most basic device that can be developed cheaply and is used to raise the temperature of air flowing through it.
A solar air collector (SAC) is a main device of a solar-thermal air system, which can absorb solar radiation and transfer the absorbed thermal energy to the air. This paper presents a systematic review of three basic types of SAC, namely, the flat-plate SAC (FPSAC), the evacuated tube SAC (EVTSAC), and the concentrated SAC.
This paper is an attempt to review and summarize the works that have been done by various researchers working in the field of solar air collectors in the recent years. It is evident that the use of solar energy is the need of the hour. It is abundantly and freely available everywhere in the world.
The insulation is placed at the back and sides of the collector. To ensure a good heat transfer to the working fluid, a frame of the tubes is attached to the absorber surface. These types of solar collectors are suitable for low to medium temperature applications and the efficiency range is 40% to 60%.
In addition, Mutabilwa and Nwaigwe performed a CFD analysis of a two-covers, double-pass flat-plate solar collector for air heating, which was validated with experimental results . The air enters through the space between the two covers and returns between the second cover and the absorber plate.
In particular, the enhanced heat transfer technologies by using a highly efficient heat transfer component (heat pipe, etc.) have been reported. Based on the analysis of the existing solar air collectors studies, this study provides a perspective for researchers to further and better study SAC technologies.
