A solar supercapacitor, also known as a photovoltaic (PV) supercapacitor, is a device that combines the energy generation capabilities of solar cells with the superior energy storage and fast charging characteristics of supercapacitors.
By simply integrating commercial silicon PV panels with supercapacitors in a load circuit, solar energy can be effectively harvested by the supercapacitor. However, in small-scale grid systems, overcharging can become a significant concern even when using assembled supercapacitor blocks.
Sharma et al. developed a PV and supercapacitor hybrid system that can intelligently manage energy, such as putting loads in a dormant state when insufficient energy is stored to conserve power and automatically activating loads when enough energy is collected and stored . In this configuration, the PV array serves as the primary power source, while the supercapacitor functions as the energy storage device mitigating uncertainties in both steady and transient states . The incorporation of a supercapacitor in this system enhances power response, improving both power quality and efficiency.
