Rechargeable Magnesium Batteries (RMB), based on Earth-abundant magnesium, can provide a cheap and environmentally responsible alternative to the benchmark Li-ion technology, especially for large energy storage applications. Currently, RMB technology is the subject of intense research efforts at laboratory scale.
Energy and Raw Materials The high cost of energy and raw materials necessary for the production of magnesium is another factor influencing its price fluctuations. For example, the majority of magnesium plants in China use coal as fuel. The production of every 1 ton of magnesium consumes 8–12 tons of high-quality coal.
Due to the rising prices of ferrosilicon and coal in China, the cost of producing raw magnesium has risen by 19%, which has also contributed to the rapid rise in magnesium prices. Spurred by the rise in magnesium prices, original magnesium production is expected to increase by 6.9 per cent this year.
According to data from China Magnesium, the ex-factory price range of 99.9% grade magnesium ingot from Fugu stood at 42,500 yuan ($6,643) to 43,000 yuan per ton on Wednesday, down 10% over the past week and 39% from a record high of 70,000 yuan per ton on Sept. 23.
Experts predict that magnesium prices will continue to go south as it suffers from strong supply and weak demand. China (the largest supplier and consumer of magnesium) recorded plenty of supply while the country battles global recession and real estate crisis, affecting its top income-generating industries.
Due to weak demand in the downstream market, domestic magnesium prices continued to drop in March, and the profits of primary magnesium factories were severely eroded. The industry's enthusiasm for production thus continued to decline, and some magnesium factories were forced to reduce production due to losses.
