The main differences between N-type and P-type solar cells lie in their doping and layer structure. N-type solar cells have a negatively doped (N-type) bulk c-Si region with a 200μm thickness and doping density of 10 16 cm -3, with a positively doped (P-type) emitter layer of 0.5μm thickness and 10 19 cm -3 doping density.
P-type cells are also more prone to metallic impurities such as interstitial iron, these impurities can lower the lifetime of the cell. N-type cells have many advantages, they are resistant to light induced degradation due to the presence of phosphorus instead of boron within the silicon.
N-type cell technology can be subdivided into heterojunction (HJT), TOPCon, IBC and other technology types. Currently, PV cell manufacturers mostly choose TOPCon or HJT to pursue mass production. The theoretical efficiency of N-type TOPCon cells can reach 28.7%, and the theoretical efficiency of heterojunction cells can reach 27.5%.
A P-type solar cell is manufactured by using a positively doped (P-type) bulk c-Si region, with a doping density of 10^16 cm^-3 and a thickness of 200μm. The emitter layer for the cell is negatively doped (N-type), featuring a doping density of 10^19 cm^-3 and a thickness of 0.5μm.
Solar cells are structured with a P-N junction, featuring a P-type crystalline silicon (c-Si) wafer with additional holes (positively charged) and an N-type c-Si wafer with additional electrons (negatively charged).
N-type cells are also less prone to metallic impurities that affect P-type cells and have a higher temperature tolerance. The main disadvantage of N-type panels would be cost. Since N-types come with longer carrier-life and higher efficiency, they are expensive to purchase.
