If the dielectric is now subjected to a varying electric field intensity that operates at a frequency which is located in the audible frequency range of the human ear (20 Hz – 20 kHz), the capacitor produces noise, the so called audible noise.
Capacitors, in particular, store electric charges, but they also play a major role in noise reduction. As digital devices become smaller and handle higher frequencies, the low-ESL and low-ESR types of bypass capacitors and decoupling capacitors are becoming more prevalent. Noises have colors? However, while a lower rated capacitor usually exhibits a higher capacitance at a given voltage than a higher rated one, the latter will tend to generate more noise. Different contact area (width, length) will have little impact on the noise created but for the same capacitance a thick capacitor will generate a lower SPL than a thinner one.
Noise management using capacitors makes use of their characteristics of high impedance in low-frequency ranges and low impedance in high-frequency ranges. A capacitor is connected between a power supply line and grounding to prevent noise propagation to the subsequent circuit (Load side) by passing the noise to the grounded side.
When noise enters a DC current flowing inside an electronic circuit, voltage fluctuations could occur, leading to IC malfunctions. To deal with this, capacitors are widely used to remove noise. This is because a capacitor functions as the simplest noise filter by blocking DC current while allowing noise to pass.
Capacitor manufactures have already developed ceramic capacitors with low distortion dielectric material, which exhibit lower ferroelectric properties and smaller deformation in regards to a voltage change. And there is a series manufactured by Murata that the capacitor is on interposer substrate to reduce the acoustic noise (Figure 2).
