Capacitors possess higher charging/discharging rates and faster response times compared with other energy storage technologies, effectively addressing issues related to discontinuous and uncontrollable renewable energy sources like wind and solar .
These capacitors exhibit extremely low ESR and equivalent series inductance, coupled with high current-handling capabilities and outstanding high-temperature stability. As a result, they show immense potential for applications in electric vehicles, 5G base stations, clean energy generation, smart grids, and other fields.
Relay controlled capacitor banks are the most common option for reducing reactive power. These capacitor banks are suitable for a large variety of loads. Reaction time is slow and there is always under or over compensation. They are, however, usually the most cost-effective solution for small and medium-sized installations.
Electrolytic capacitors are known for their large capacitance and high volumetric efficiency, making them suitable for applications in electronic devices or as energy buffers. However, they suffer from drawbacks such as high equivalent series resistance (ESR) and relatively short service life.
Then, the voltage gain of the proposed CCB converter can be doubled compared with the conventional boost converter. Further, unlike the switched capacitor high voltage gain converter, there is no large current spikes on the capacitors in the proposed CCB converter, which can reduce the current stresses and the costs of capacitors a lot.
However, the converters with a switched capacitor are difficult to achieve good dynamic performance due to the high-peaks pulsating currents of the switches and the high instantaneous currents of capacitors in the process of mode change, which will increase the switch stresses a lot [ 1, 19 - 21 ].
