Future prospects of solar technology Solar energy is one of the best options to meet future energy demand since it is superior in terms of availability, cost effectiveness, accessibility, capacity, and efficiency compared to other renewable energy sources , .
Introduction Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is indispensable for realizing a global low-carbon energy system and, eventually, carbon neutrality. Benefiting from the technological developments in the PV industry, the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of PV energy has been reduced by 85% over the past decade .
Author to whom correspondence should be addressed. The production and consumption of energy must be converted to renewable alternatives in order to meet climate targets. During the past few decades, solar photovoltaic systems (PVs) have become increasingly popular as an alternative energy source.
One of the critical factors in economic growth and development is energy. To meet the upsurge in energy demand caused by increasing populations and growing economies, solar energy offers an ideal solution since the counterparts of renewable energy can be damaging to the environment.
Theoretically, solar energy possesses the potential to adequately fulfill the energy demands of the entire world if technologies for its harvesting and supplying were readily available . Nearly four million exajoules (1 E J = 10 18 J) of solar energy reaches the earth annually, ca. 5 × 10 4 EJ of which is claimed to be easily harvestable .
Up to 2012, the global cumulative PV installations have reached about 102 GWp and represents possible production of 110 TWh/year of electricity . The amount of electricity meets the demand of more than 20 million households worldwide and covers only 0.5% of global electricity demand .

Solar energy: Potential and future prospects
Only three renewable energy sources (i.e., biomass, geothermal, and solar) can be utilized to yield sufficient heat energy for power generation. Of these three, solar energy exhibits the highest global potential since geothermal sources are limited to a few locations and the supply of biomass is not ubiquitous in nature [6], [7] .
