For the first time, more than a quarter of EU electricity (27%) was provided by wind and solar in 2023, up from 23% in 2022. This drove renewable electricity to a record high of 44%, passing the 40% mark for the first year in the EU’s history. Combined wind and solar generation increased by a record 90 TWh and installed capacity by 73 GW.
This corresponds to a solar irradiation of 1100 and 1510 kWh/(m2a) onto an optimally oriented PV system (both in terms of southward orientation and optimum tilt angle). After subtracting losses of electricity generation in the PV system, an average annual electricity yield between 935 and 1280 kWh per installed kWp is obtained.
Concerning solar power, the estimate of €293/MWh is for a large plant capable of producing in the range of 50–100 GWh/year located in a favorable location (such as in Southern Europe). For a small household plant that can produce around 3 MWh/year, the cost is between 400 and €700/MWh, depending on location.
The lifetime cost per kWh of new solar and wind capacity added in Europe in 2021 will average at least four to six times less than the marginal generating costs of fossil fuels in 2022. Globally, new renewable capacity added in 2021 could reduce electricity generation costs in 2022 by at least USD 55 billion.
