China accounts for more than 80% of the global solar cell exports, more than 50% of lithium-ion batteries and more than 20% of electric vehicles.
After years of making big promises to invest in solar, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are now competing to open the largest solar fields in Central Asia. And neighboring China, with a surfeit of domestic solar equipment manufacturers nurtured under subsidies that ended two years ago, is gunning for a big role in these fast-growing solar markets.
Beyond policy uncertainty, doubts also remain about the factual dependence of the US and Indian solar markets on Chinese products, technology, and the equipment needed to launch a domestic supply chain as there are significant gaps between module production capacity and local capacity for other nodes and materials in the PV supply chain.
According to the report, China’s share in making polysilicon, wafers, solar cells and solar panels were, in order, 94%, 96%, 90% and 81%. Polysilicon is the key base material for the solar PV supply chain, while wafers (thin slices of semiconductors) are used to make integrated circuits in solar cells.
