Morocco has the natural resources to develop lithium-ion batteries, but the development of a national ecosystem to support that is much-needed. Rabat - Morocco’s recent announcement of an upcoming gigafactory for electric car batteries has made headlines in the past few days.
The investment is also poised to gain from the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act, a similar legislation concerning mineral supply chains. Morocco maintains free trade agreements with both the US and the EU. Morocco’s massive phosphate reserves are a critical factor in its attractiveness as EV battery production hub.
To support the development of a Moroccan batteries ecosystem, the inventor of a graphite anode has called for the creation of a nationwide team including stakeholders in the mining sector, such as Managem and OCP, the automobile ecosystem, and the chemical sector.
The two automobile giants have already established partnerships with battery manufacturers who have larger capacities of 30, 40, or even 50 GWh, he said, adding that the two companies would only purchase the made-in-Morocco batteries if they are good and safe.

In June, Chinese electrolyte producer Guangzhou Tinci Materials Technology, revealed plans to erect a plant in the Kingdom. The firm’s Singapore division is set to invest as much as US$280m for the production of lithium-ion battery materials.
Yazami noted, however, that Morocco is not manufacturing “the products that contain cobalt that can be used in a battery,” which calls for the development of local production in Morocco of NMC (Nickel, Manganese, and Cobalt) and LFP (Lithium, Iron, Phosphate) batteries.
