A discussion of their effect on the overall protection used on series compensated lines. First, however, a brief review will be presented on the application and protection of series capacitors. Series capacitors are applied to negate a percentage of and hence reduce the overall inductive reac-tance of a transmission line.
The introduction of series capacitors in transmission lines causes problems in terms of reliability and the security of distance protection relays. As distance protection is widely used in the transmission network, the challenge of applying it to series compensated lines has been taken up by utilities and relay manufacturers in various ways.
As for the series capacitor, it will be pro-tected once the current levels increase beyond the protective level of the bypass equipment. The presence of the transients may also excite one or more of the natural torsional frequencies of the mechanical shaft system of the generator(s).
Typically, series capacitors are applied to compensate for 25 to 75 per-cent of the inductive reactance of the transmission line. The series capacitors are exposed to a wide range of currents as depicted in Figure 1, which can result in large voltages across the capacitors.
As mentioned earlier, protective equipment is applied to the series capacitor to protect it from the excessive voltages which can occur during faults. This equipment takes one of two basic forms: a parallel power gap or a metal-oxide varistor (MOV).
The compensation level ranges from 20–44%, and the series capacitors are located variously at the line end or middle in the different lines [ 51 ]. Voltage inversion is present in their system, but not current inversion [ 51 ]. The protection scheme was developed with extensive real-time simulation.

Series capacitor compensation reduces a line''s total impedance. It improves voltage regulation, increases the voltage-collapse limit of the line, improves the first swing stability limit of the system, improves reactive power balance, reduces transmission losses, and allows the line to be operated closer to its thermal limit [3], [4], [5].

Capacitors in Series and Series Capacitor Circuits
With capacitors in series, the charging current ( i C ) flowing through the capacitors is THE SAME for all capacitors as it only has one path to follow. Then, Capacitors in Series all have the same current flowing through them as i T = i 1 = i 2 = i 3 etc. Therefore each capacitor will store the same amount of electrical charge, Q on its plates regardless of its capacitance.
