As the name obviously indicates, the Lithium Ion batteries use the Lithium ions to get the job done. Lithium is a very light metal with high energy density, this property enables the battery to be light in weight and provide high current with a small form factor.
The capacity of a lithium battery refers to the amount of charge the battery can store. It is usually expressed in milliamp-hours (mAh) or ampere-hours (Ah). By integrating the lithium battery charge curve and discharge curve, the actual capacity of the lithium battery can be calculated.
Like all batteries the Li-ion battery also has a voltage and capacity rating. The nominal voltage rating for all lithium cells will be 3.6V, so you need higher voltage specification you have to combine two or more cells in series to attain it. By default all the lithium ion cells will have a nominal voltage of only ~3.6V.
It is usually expressed in milliamp-hours (mAh) or ampere-hours (Ah). By integrating the lithium battery charge curve and discharge curve, the actual capacity of the lithium battery can be calculated. At the same time, multiple charge and discharge cycle tests can also be performed to observe the attenuation of capacity.
When the battery is discharging, the lithium ions move back across the electrolyte to the positive electrode (the LiCoO 2) from the carbon/graphite, producing the energy that powers the battery. In both cases, electrons flow in the opposite direction to the ions around the external circuit.
Simply storing lithium-ion batteries in the charged state also reduces their capacity (the amount of cyclable Li+) and increases the cell resistance (primarily due to the continuous growth of the solid electrolyte interface on the anode).

Because lithium-ion batteries can have a variety of positive and negative electrode materials, the energy density and voltage vary accordingly. The open-circuit voltage is higher than in aqueous batteries (such as lead–acid, nickel–metal hydride and nickel–cadmium). Internal resistance increases with both cycling and age, although this depends strongly on the voltage and temperature the batteries are stored at. Rising internal resi…
