This report focuses on the analytical assessment of photovoltaic (PV) plant performance on the overall PV system level. In particular, this report provides detailed guidelines and comprehensive descriptions of methods and models used when analyzing grid-connected PV system performance. The main objectives of this report are:
Investigate PV module degradation modes of new PV technologies and new materials and designs required for advanced PV modules to derive the most appropriate testing methods and mitigation strategies. Review of repair methods for PV modules in terms of efficiency and long-term stability.
The denominator of this KPIs may be referred to as either related to the same period as the numerator or to a cumulated number of installations. In the frame of this study it is shown, that currently used KPIs are not sufficient when comparing the ability of solar manufacturers to produce reliable solar modules or inverters.
The main objectives of this report are: to learn from previous bad experiences and draw out lessons for new installations in the IEA PVPS member countries. In the starting section, “Photovoltaic System Monitoring”, best practices in PV monitoring are documented.
Presently, PV modules are only going through qualification tests (such as performed according to the IEC 61215 for crystalline silicon-based modules) which provide limited information as (i) they do not provide information on the maximum lifetime that can be expected and (ii) they do not consider climate specificities .
