The type of solar battery you have or plan to use plays a significant role. Some batteries, such as lithium-ion, are more tolerant of various temperatures and environmental conditions, making them suitable for outdoor use.
If you opt for outdoor installation, it's also essential to use weatherproof enclosures or cabinets to protect the batteries from rain, snow, and other environmental factors. Adequate ventilation is crucial to prevent heat buildup inside the enclosure; in some cases, additional cooling mechanisms may be necessary.
While additional charge or discharge of batteries can lead to the reduction of battery bank life, and consequently, significant operational and replacement costs for the HRES, storing excess power requires the capability of storage in different capacities at intermittent intervals.
Al-Sharif et al. performed a sensitivity analysis (Fig. 6) on cost of energy and excess electricity based on the changes in the number of 1 kWh battery units and the photovoltaics installation capacity in a PV/WT/DG HRES. It was observed that excess electricity is especially high for low battery capacities.
In fact, after the capacity of the batteries is filled with excess electricity, there must be a demand for the use of stored energy; otherwise, there would not be enough space to store more excess electricity at the later intervals. Furthermore, dependence on batteries to store excess electricity poses challenges for the hybrid system.
Adding a battery bank reduced excess power by up to 15%, while applying an electrolyzer/fuel-cell unit reduced it to less than 5%, but at the cost of increasing the COE by over 40%. Applying a pumped hydro unit reduced excess power to less than 5%, with a COE increase of about 6%.
