Circuit diagram for Overvoltage protection using Zener voltage regulator circuit is given below. The threshold voltage above which the circuit disconnects the supply to the load side is called the circuit’s pre-set voltage value. The design of the circuit is such that the pre-set value of the circuit is the rating of the Zener diode.
A comparator over-voltage detection circuit can be used to implement a protection circuit with a bleed resistor (see Figure 6). When the voltage is larger than Vclamp, the MOSFET turns on, and current flows through the resistor to discharge excess energy. The voltage on the capacitor is latched at Vclamp. Where Cbus is the input capacitor value.
Overvoltage protection is a characteristic of a power supply system, which somehow deals with the voltage across the load side when the input voltage exceeds the pre-set value. In some situations where the input voltage is higher than expected, we always use an overvoltage protection or crowbar protection circuit.
A DC over-voltage protection (OVP) circuit may also be required. This application note describes how to choose the input capacitor value and how to design the OVP circuit. When the motor speed is decreasing, the controller may generate a negative torque to slow the speed of the motor.
This is one of the two configurations of overvoltage protection circuits using Zener diode. This circuit not only protects the load side circuit but also regulates the input supply voltage to maintain a steady voltage. Circuit diagram for Overvoltage protection using Zener voltage regulator circuit is given below.
If it is not practical to fit enough capacitance on the input rail, an OVP circuit can also be used to discharge the energy and limit the input rail voltage. The energy recycled back into the DC input rail is related to many factors, such as the rate of speed deceleration, the mechanical load, and the motor characteristic parameters.
Transient Suppression Devices and Voltage Clamping
While zener diodes and fast recovery avalanche diodes are fast acting and effective at clamping overvoltages, the most common overvoltage suppression clamping technique is the use of metal oxide varistors, or MOV''s. As well as their high voltage ratings, metal oxide varistors are capable of handling much larger surge currents, be it at a slower rate, and can be used in both DC and …

Chapter 5 Protection Circuit Design
Overvoltage protection . 2.1 Overvoltage causes and their suppression . 1) Overvoltage causes . Due to the high switching speedof IGBTs, at turn -off or during FWD reverse recovery, the current change rate (di/dt) is very high. Therefore the circuit wiring inductance to the module can cause a high turn-off surge voltage (V=L(di/dt)). At an example, using the IGBT''s waveform at turn-off …
