However, it is the use of vanadium in vanadium flow batteries that has really caught the attention of investors recently, pushing the price of the metal up by more than 130% in the past year – a bigger price rise than for other “hot’’ battery metals such as cobalt, lithium and nickel.
The price has been driven by tight supply and strong orders from the steel industry, plus the opinion of many experts that vanadium flow batteries will eventually overtake lithium batteries for large scale uses such as grid stabilisation battery plants because of longer life and greater stability.
Australian Vanadium also has a technology company subsidiary VSun Energy that is marketing vanadium flow batteries for a wide range of applications including grid storage for renewable power such as wind and solar and as backup power.
Vanadium is the key commodity in what is known as a “flow” battery. Vanadium redox flow batteries (or VRFBs) are better suited to large scale applications (stationary storage), such as network support for electricity grid operators and telcos looking to power off-grid communications towers and utility scale installations.
The company’s interests in the exploration of vanadium ores and the development of vanadium-based electric storage systems are supported by its tin and coal trading business. The stock is listed on the London Stock Exchange and sells over the counter at $0.07 as of February, with a market cap of $80 million.
The global market for flow batteries is gearing up for exponential growth, fueled by an escalating need for renewable energy storage and advancements in grid modernization. Flow batteries, renowned for their distinct advantages in large-scale energy storage applications, are poised to revolutionize the energy landscape.
