Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s 2020 Grid Energy Storage Technologies Cost and Performance Assessment provides a range of cost estimates for technologies in 2020 and 2030 as well as a framework to help break down different cost categories of energy storage systems.
In 2020, the year-on-year growth rate of energy storage projects was 136%, and electrochemical energy storage system costs reached a new milestone of 1500 RMB/kWh.
By definition, the projections follow the same trajectories as the normalized cost values. Storage costs are $124/kWh, $207/kWh, and $338/kWh in 2030 and $76/kWh, $156/kWh, and $258/kWh in 2050. Costs for each year and each trajectory are included in the Appendix.
The largest markets for stationary energy storage in 2030 are projected to be in North America (41.1 GWh), China (32.6 GWh), and Europe (31.2 GWh). Excluding China, Japan (2.3 GWh) and South Korea (1.2 GWh) comprise a large part of the rest of the Asian market.
Industry attention was also devoted to the effectiveness of applications and the safety of energy storage systems, and lithium-ion battery energy storage systems saw new developments toward higher voltages. Energy storage system costs continued to decline.
