We have demonstrated a high-rate performance in solid-state lithium and Li-ion batteries using a silica-gel solid nanocomposite electrolyte of a FSI-based ionic liquid and Li-salt.
The extremely high porosity of the silica matrix (70 to 90%) gives these nanocomposite electrolyte materials a gel-like consistency and thus making them mechanically compliant similar to polymer electrolytes. These silica gels are sometimes indicated as hybrid solid electrolytes, as they contain a liquid.
In summary, the bayberry-like silica nanoparticles with microporous structure have been synthesized by the Stőber method and a novel composite gel polymer electrolyte separator has been prepared. The separator has unmatched thermal stability, ion conductivity and high lithium-ion migration.
By condensation reaction of moisture in the air, thermal conductive silica gel can achieve low molecular release, initiate crosslinking and curing 15, and form high-performance elastomers. The thermal conductive silica gel not only has high and low-temperature resistance, but also has the advantages of aging resistance, electrical insulation, etc.
However, for the silica nanocomposites, as those described in this paper, the ionic “liquid” electrolyte becomes solid-like when confined in the tens of nanometer-sized channels both by the increase in viscosity and by the adsorption on the silica wall confining the channel.
The silica gel suspension was transferred to the PVDF-HFP solution and magnetically stirred at 40 °C for 30 min to ensure uniform dispersion. The mass fractions of doped silica in the composite electrolyte were 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt% and 20 wt%, respectively.
