Lithium can be relatively expensive and difficult to recycle, and lithium-based batteries can have issues with overheating. Lithium-ion batteries power our present but the future of power may be in development in Biomedical and Chemical Engineering Professor Ian Hosein's lab.
As imports spike, U.S. lithium-ion battery manufacturing is poised to climb quickly in the coming years. After exiting 2021 with an estimated 38 GWh of annual production capacity, domestic output is on pace to hit 68.9 GWh in 2022 and 120 GWh in 2023, according to an S&P Global Market Intelligence forecast.
The assets include the entire patent portfolio of Lithium Werks, manufacturing facilities in China, key business contracts and hiring of existing employees as a going concern.
"Along with Faradion, Lithium Werks will enable us to accelerate our vision of establishing India at the core of developments in global battery chemistries and help us provide a secure, safe and high-performance supply chain to the large and growing Indian EV and energy storage markets," he said.
