Short answer: No. A capacitance measurement will only give you part of the picture. You also need to measure the ESR, especially for electrolytic capacitors. You could have an electrolytic capacitor that measures exactly what its rated capacitance suggests, but the cap will not work at all in the circuit because its ESR is too high. Functional?
The cap will have long charged to the voltage source level by the time you put a meter on it and get a reading. However, that's plenty slow enough to see it charge up with a scope. At 50 us per division, you should see a nice exponential. A voltage can be measured between any two points. Yes, you can measure the voltage across the capacitor.
Measuring capacitors with a multimeter requires knowledge of the circuit. Globally, any measurement in a circuit is challenging without a good understanding of the circuit. You might still attempt some measurements without this knowledge, but expect numerous false positives and false negatives. However, this is not a unique requirement for capacitors.
If only a simple multimeter without a function for capacitance measurement is available, then only the rough functionality of the capacitor or electrolytic capacitor can be checked. Proceed as follows: 1. Expose the capacitor First of all, the capacitor to be checked should be completely removed from the circuit.
To test a capacitor using a digital multimeter (DMM), first visually inspect the capacitor for any signs of deterioration. If it's used in an ac circuit, set the DMM to measure ac voltage; if it's used in a dc circuit, set it to measure dc voltage. Then, turn the dial to the Capacitance Measurement mode.
I know the voltage the multimeter puts across the capacitor can fry other components in the circuit if you try to test caps on board. I also know if you test a cap on the circuit board you'll get a false reading since you'll be testing capacitance of the entire circuit.
How to measure capacitor with digital multimeter?
Use a DC Power Source: If the capacitor requires a DC power source to function, connect it to the DC power source before measuring. This ensures that the capacitor is in its operating condition.

Then, if the power source dropped a bit, the capacitor would start discharging to compensate. Likewise, if the power source increased, the capacitor would absorb some of that increase by storing the charge.
