Theory/Calculation To quantify the building shadow and calculate the available rooftop area for installing the solar PV system, the study used Hillshade analysis. The hillshade can be calculated by setting the location of a hypothetical light source and calculating the shade value of each cell in the raster.
We assumed that the estimated building footprint is representative of the available rooftop area in each FN i.e., 100% of the estimated rooftop is available for solar panel installation. To install 1 kWp of roof-mounted solar PV, 10 m 2 of rooftop area is required, which is in line with the thin film technology currently in use.
The rooftop area of buildings is the data basis for estimating the rooftop solar PV potential. However, currently, roof data cannot be obtained directly in most areas. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a city-scale acquisition method for building rooftop information.
Overall, the national rooftop areas are substantial across all scenarios, ranging from 2100 to 4500 km2. The applied methods and scenarios provide a straightforward way to reveal the spatiotemporal variability and define realistic ranges of the solar photovoltaic potential without requiring detailed information about each building.
In this study, we calculated that the maximum acceptable solar radiation power per hour per unit area of the rooftop is approximately 400 W. By combining this value with the existing technical conditions, the specification of the solar PV panel is determined to be 1 m × 1 m, and the rated power is 200 W.
But it is difficult to accurately estimate the availability of rooftop area for solar radiation on a city-scale. In this study, a generic framework for estimating the rooftop solar PV potential on a city-scale using publicly available high-resolution satellite images is proposed.

HOW MUCH ROOFTOP SOLAR CAN BE INSTALLED IN AUSTRALIA?
rooftop solar is greater than current consumption in the national electricity market (just under 200 TWh per year). Australia is currently using less than 5 per cent of the potential capacity for rooftop solar. Where is the greatest potential for rooftop solar? Around half of the unused potential for rooftop solar is in residential zones.
