At a minimum, these documents must include specific documentation of dead loads, live loads, wind loads, and, where applicable, snow loads for the existing roof design. These plans will provide important information for the solar designer when the homeowner decides to install a system.

Do I need to meter a photovoltaic system?

It is assumed that aluminum framed photovoltaic (PV) panels mounted on a “post” and rail mounting system, the most common in the industry today, will be installed by the homeowner. While metering the system is encouraged, the specification does not address system wiring elements for associated system sensors or monitoring equipment.

Can a solar inverter be installed manually?

This allows one to manually isolate the solar system from the home’s electric service panel and from the utility grid. Builders should be aware of these local requirements and make accommodations in the AC conduit run accordingly. The builder should not assume that the inverter installed will include an onboard manual AC disconnect switch.
