This document describes an experiment on charging and discharging of capacitors. It involves using a 100μF capacitor, 1MΩ resistor, 9V battery, and multimeter. The procedure is to connect these components in a circuit and take voltage readings across the capacitor at 20 second intervals as it charges.
(Why?) You can check this experimentally. The trick is to first keep the charging voltage to V0/2, let the capacitor charge for a time much greater than RC of the circuit, disconnect the power supply, increase its voltage to V0, recon ect it and let the capacitor charge to V0. Plot I2, t curves for the two parts and find out

If you have a bench power supply, then you can set a voltage which is less than the rated voltage of the capacitor. Charge the capacitor for a short period, say 4 – 5 seconds and disconnect the power supply. Set the Digital Multimeter to DC Voltmeter settings and measure the voltage across the capacitor.
energy dissipated in charging a capacitorSome energy is s ent by the source in charging a capacitor. A part of it is dissipated in the circuit and the rema ning energy is stored up in the capacitor. In this experim nt we shall try to measure these energies. With fixed values of C and R m asure the current I as a function of time. The ener
By measuring the capacitor with a voltmeter, you can verify its ability to hold a charge and ensure reliable performance in electronic circuits. Congratulations! You’ve now mastered the art of testing capacitors with a multimeter.

You can tell when the capacitor is fully charged when the voltmeter reading reads 10 : text{V}. Once fully charged, the switch should be moved to position Y and the capacitor will begin discharging. Record the voltage on the voltmeter every 10 seconds until the capacitor has fully discharged left(0 : text{V}right).

Note however not all capacitors are polarised (usually the smaller μF ones) and can be connected in any way. Another important thing to take care of is making measurements of voltage at the set time intervals. One option would be to use an oscilloscope or to use a larger capacitor/resistor to increase the charging/discharging time.
