Mnangagwa was present for the official opening of the sprawling plant in Goromonzi, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) southeast of Zimbabwe's capital, Harare. “Lithium is the mineral of the present and the future ... and value addition will position our country as an emerging and competitive player in the global lithium value chain,” Mnangagwa said.
The plant opened by Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe, an arm of Chinese company Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, has a capacity to process 4.5 million metric tons of hard rock lithium into concentrate for export per year, Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa said.
Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ) produced approximately 280 000 tonnes of lithium concentrate in 2023. The company plans to double production in 2024, but is facing challenges due to softening commodity prices.
Zimbabwe banned the export of unprocessed lithium ore last year to stop rampant extraction and smuggling of the mineral by artisanal miners. Now, miners are encouraged to go beyond the production of lithium concentrates, which are shipped for further processing outside the country, mostly to China.
The government’s call for lithium mining companies to produce battery-grade lithium is currently underway with Sabi Star Mine owners Max Mind Investment and partners already in preparation to construct an industrial Park which will host lithium battery manufacturing plants.
The Arcadia lithium project located near Harare, Zimbabwe, is considered to be one of the world’s biggest hard rock lithium resources. Prospect Resources fully owns the lithium project through its subsidiary, Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ). The pre-feasibility study (PFS) of the project was completed in June 2017.
