Solar panels produce 0.8kWh per daylight hour, on average. Your daily solar output will be higher than this average in summer, when there are more daylight hours, and lower than average in winter. We'll go into more detail below. Your solar panel system will be most productive at solar noon, when the sun is at its highest point in the sky.
If your system has two panels, with each panel capable of generating 300 watts per hour, and your installation receives four hours of sunlight each day, the daily output would equal 2,400 watt hours (Wh) or 2.4 kWh per day.
To calculate solar panel output per day (in kWh), you need to consider three factors: the solar panel's maximum power rating (wattage), and the average peak solar hours in your area. For example, a 200W solar panel in an area with 5 peak solar hours would produce 1 kWh per day.
To calculate peak sun hours for your solar panels, use the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s PVWatts Calculator. First, enter your address in the search bar and click “Go”. This tool estimates the solar energy production of your panels and is the data source for our peak sun hours calculator.
The number of peak solar hours you get is determined by average peak solar hours. South California and Spain, for example, get 6 peak solar hours worth of solar energy, while the UK and North USA get about 3-4 hours. Use the solar maps below to determine the peak solar hours in your area.
Knowing the annual sunlight in your area enables you to figure out how much electricity your solar panels will generate. It also helps you determine the 'break-even point' i.e. the point at which you will have paid back your initial investment on having your solar panels installed.
